Impressive Metal Roof Installations Around the World
Dec 31, 2018Metal roofing materials have been around for thousands of years, evolving with people, civilization, technology, and advancements in architecture. Some of the world’s most impressive structures have metal roofs, or structures built from metal seams or panels. Whether traveling the world or the continental United States, if you look around for all the unique uses for metal in the roofing of historical and monumental buildings, you will be amazed. Here are just three examples of unforgettable metal roofing.
Epcot Spaceship Earth in Orlando, Florida
Epcot Spaceship Earth is a modern marvel of out-of-this-world metal work in architecture and roofing. America has proudly boasted this wonder since the early 1980s, and it is still standing strong today at Epcot Studios in Orlando, Florida. Spaceship Earth took more than two years to complete, and it is most notable for its unique spherical shape, as well as the dark and mesmerizing ride that operates inside it. The base and structure are made of steel, while the legendary outer panels are constructed of thinner galvanized steel. Last, the shiny outer panels use aluminum to create the “roof,” which essentially covers the entire sphere-shaped structure. Nothing like it exists anywhere else on the planet!
Jurassic Museum of Asturias in Colunga, Spain
This incredibly interesting building is composed of multiple domes that architects have adorned with valuable copper – a fitting crown for a museum with so many priceless artifacts inside. The Jurassic Museum of Asturias was completed and opened in Spain in 2004. It displays a more modern spin on the traditional use of copper for an intricate, one-of-a-kind roof that typically adorns important buildings. What’s notable – unforgettable, even – about this roof is that the dome shapes mimic the footprint of a pterodactyl. The museum is the clever work of architect Rufino Uribelarrea. What an incredible copper roof!
St. Catherine’s Church in Reutlingen, Germany
This gorgeous gothic-style church showcases a stunning, eye-catching zinc tile metal roof. It has stood the test of time for over 120 years and is still in great shape. The church’s roof is notable for its longevity, as well as how unique it is in appearance compared to the clay tile roofing of the time.
